IC INFORMATION;
Characters Name: Roman Godfrey
Age: 18
Canon: Hemlock Grove
Canon Point: Post Series
Species: Human/Upir
Gender: Male
Orientation: Straight? At the beginning of the series, it's easier to say he's straight but there are a lot of jokes canonly that he's involved with his best friend? Possibly bi-curious but only with one person (if at all) since he reacts very defensively when it's brought up. There's a ton of subtext in the book and the show.
History: WIKIA
Appearance: Fucking Skarsgårds.
Personality: Let me start this with a direct quote that sums things up beautifully:
"She regarded the boy: a narcissistic, insecure, oversensitive, and underparented adolescent heir to a Fortune 500 company with a substance abuse problem and homoerotic tendencies--it would have been more surprising if he didn't 'see things sometimes.'"
Roman Godfrey is a damn onion, there are many layers to his personality; though, not everything is visible to all people that he meets. At the first glance he's the epitome of a maladjusted rich boy, stand-offish and incredibly socially awkward. He cares very little about a majority of the people around him, most people are disposable to him and he has no issue communicating as much. Throughout his life, he's been 'popular' with people but it has more to do with the money than it does his shitty personality. It says a lot that before Peter Rumancek comes to town that Roman's only 'friend' is his cousin. Since most of the people around him aren't all that important, he doesn't hold back with what he has to say to them. Then again, he doesn't hold back when he feels someone he's close to needs to hear the truth; they may not always like it but he's going to say it anyway. He's been known to call people names, not care about social standards when it comes to cussing and sometimes threaten violence if he's had a bad day and things are continuing to not go his way. He has no problem telling someone in the middle of the day that they look like shit or to fuck off. Since he has been spoiled to a certain degree, he used to a certain way of life and as a result comes of a rather self centered at times. Unless it's really important, he's not to keen on doing much for others unless he gets something in return for it.
Underneath that prickly and mostly unapproachable exterior is someone far more sensitive than he cares to admit. He cries when he's upset and doesn't seem to have much shame over it; feelings are feelings and you can't always keep them contained. Horribly adjusted and spoiled as he his, he does genuinely want to be a better person and the few things that he cares about he goes all in for and doesn't back down. Since he's lead a rather lonely life, he's loyal to a ridiculous degree to Peter. His sensitivity and surprisingly deep capacity to care also shows through for his cousin, but is even more prominent when it comes to his sister Shelley (and later with his daughter Nadia as well). He defends them all with a fervor that borders on obsessive sometimes, trying to do right by them to keep them safe and to keep them near him. He knows how to take things seriously, understands the gravity of everything that's important and when he steps up he really steps up and gives his all.
By that same token, the people he hates he's catch the brunt of his razor-sharp tongue (though, it should be mentioned that it also shows up with his friends, even if it's just a fraction as much); this mostly exhibited with his mother who he openly hates. His determination to go against her strengthens his bond with Peter and even leads to his downfall into self-loathing when he truly transforms into the Upir he was destined to be. That being said, she has been extremely manipulative throughout his life and continued to try even after he inherited the family company and rebelled against her harder than he ever had in his life. It should also be mentioned that he blames his mother for his father's death (which he witnessed in part), which is just another thing on his shit list when it comes to her.
In dark times he spirals downward, sulking or acting out in terrible ways but generally he wants to be less of a monster. To put it simply the worst thing he could ever imagine for himself is becoming his mother; which doesn't exactly turn out the way he wants. Ultimately, he realises he's become the monster he never wanted to be and would rather be dead than continue to exist; even if his intentions had always been good, his methods and actions had lead him down the wrong path. He's more than complicated, almost always conflicted and does have inner demons that plague him from day to day; but generally he wants to do things that are for the greater good, even if it's in a violent way (as exampled when he visits a prostitute and beats the shit out of her abusive husband/pimp; he wants to help but makes it seem like it's for selfish motives and it's actually not). It should also be noted that he can be very self-destructive, though some of that is not likely to come into play since coming to Holly Heights would be viewed from his perspective as something of a second chance to redeem himself. He never wanted to be a monster, even trying to eliminate the biological factors that made him an Upir, though he never finished the treatments.
All in all he's just a flawed and fucked up kid with 2.4 million parental issues but at this point in his life he's mostly harmless.
Abilities:
✪ Enhanced Strength & Durability - He can throw people quite well and is able to endure even harsh attacks without it really bothering him. That doesn't mean that he's entirely destructible, while he has a high tolerance for pain he can definitely feel it if it's intense enough.
✪ Mesmerisation - He's able to convince people of things quite easily with this power and even control them through doing his bidding or wipe memories. It likely won't come back here, but I'll list it anyway.
✪ Regenerative Healing - Self explanatory, it isn't always instant but it helps in some cases.
✪ Immortality?? - Not like it matters in a place where people don't age.
Other: Just as a heads up, if he gets accepted I will most likely do a disclaimer/opt-out post for people since he doesn't always use tact when he's talking; even if he's trying to be what he considers 'amiable'. Also since the first season of the show follows the book very closely, characterisation comes from both sources.
SAMPLES;
First Person:
video;
[ On the screen is the pale face of Roman Godfrey, legend in his own mind and little more than a speck on the radar of Holly Heights. He's smoking, not even sure if anyone is really going to listen before he speaks. ]
I don't really expect any of you... [ He stops. Calm, Roman, Calm. Don't call them fuckheads or assholes, they didn't do anything to you. The next word it more than a little strained as it comes out of his mouth. ]
...people to know anything about me, but I'm looking for my daughter, Nadia. My sister too, Shelley. If anyone has information about them that isn't total shit, you'll be rewarded.
[ Short on funds as he was, it wasn't a completely empty promise; he had no idea how, but he was determined to gain back something that resembled the wealth he had before. There's a pause before he says anything again, stabbing the tail of of his cigarette into an ashtray on the desk. ]
Someone tell me how to get a fucking divorce too, this is bullshit.
[ He stops for a moment, indignant look on his face as he ran his tongue over his teeth. Don't be a baby, Roman, don't fucking cry. ]
...please.
[ It was a start, however small it was. ]
Third Person:
A preliminary look around Holly Heights had told Roman everything that he needed to know: this sure as hell wasn't heaven. Not that he thought he would have deserved such a glorious afterlife or that he particularly believed in it, the thought was still something that bothered him. All that shit for nothing, no reward for his so-called noble sacrifice...no rest for the wicked, as some would say.
He'd ducked into one of the shops, procuring that card that had been provided for him and opting to make his first purchase a pack of cigarettes and a lighter; leaning against the wall of the store as soon as he stepped outside and lit up. His expression was stoic, watching the wisps of smoke rising from the end of his cigarette and doing the same in turn as he exhaled.
"Fuck..." He said.
Holly Heights, more like Helly Heights; that thought bounce around in his brain for a moment as he took another drag from his cigarette. He would have laughed if this whole thing weren't so damn depressing. What was dead should stay dead, right? Then again, it wouldn't be the first time a member of his family had miraculously returned from the dead. He felt sick to his stomach, thinking about the last few months. Who was dead. Who wasn't dead.
"Fucking shit." He said, throwing down his cigarette to snuff it out prematurely. He stared down at it, regretting his decision for a moment before shoving his hands into his pockets and began walking away. If he were thinking clearly he would realise this place was a blessing in disguise, but he wasn't.
"What a waste." He murmured to himself, sparing another glance at the sooty mess on the sidewalk. Was he talking about the cigarette? His life? In the end, did it really matter?
